About eSteak.net

What is eSteak?

eSteak is an exchange platform for MooTools-plugin files. MooTools is an object oriented JavaScript framework which can be extended very easily and many people do this. Sadly it is very hard (sometimes) to find the functionality you need because so many people develop so many different things and there is no global wiki or listing where those could be listed. (like for jQuery)

Before

The only existing way to announce an own plugin and to find and discuss about other ones, is the MooTools forum. Personally, I dont't like to browse thousands of forum threads just to find an image gallery plugin which is then no longer available on the maintainer's website.

The goal

I wanted a website where downloading MooTools-plugins is as easy as downloading MooTools itself. The download should care for the dependencies automatically and common methods like tagging and rating should make the actual search easier and faster. I also wanted all this to be totally free (of course) and as I did not find anything like this, I decided to put up such a website on my own.

Development

I discovered the power of the Symfony framework a few weeks before I had these thoughts, so I chose it as a development basis. The first thing you may mention is, that Symfony uses prototype and script.aculo.us instead of MooTools and I did nothing to integrate it in my project. Well, I didn't have the time to make it perfect, maybe I'll switch sometime but for now it does everything I wanted and it is perfectly integrated.

The name

Why eSteak.net? The MooTools framework has a slight connection to cows and the most common pieces of a cow, next to milk, are steaks, aren't they? As I don't want to provide any real meat, I named the website eSteak and I chose ".net" as domain because the MooTools developers are somehow connected via the internet, so "net" is perfect.

Future

My personal target is to become a part of this network with this website. I will not provide any discussion functionality here or examples for the MooTools core because there are great websites for this purpose already, but if you like to have any other functionality that fits to this website, please contact me.

Thanks

The main design was made by NodeThrityThree for Free CSS Templates and the icons were taken from the silk icon set by Mark James.
The steak logo was designed by Daniel Dietze.

As I paid absolutely nothing for all these things (they are completely free), I want to thank all their authors/creators.
